A Midsummer Night's Dream – Complete Script in Chinese and English
Scene I – A Wood near Athens
[The scene opens with Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, his bride-to-be, preparing for their wedding. They are discussing the coming of the new moon, which will mark the day of their marriage.]
Theseus:
Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
Is come, and we must make our mirth complete.
The time is past, and now the moon doth shine
With silver beams upon this happy night.
Let us go forth and meet the revelers,
For they are all assembled in the court.
Hippolyta:
I do not know what joy I should prefer,
But I do love you well enough to be content.
And yet I think that I shall never be
So happy as I was when I was your enemy.
Theseus:
That is a strange thing, but I believe it true.
Love makes us blind, and hate makes us wise.
Now let us go, and see if all things are ready.
Scene II – A Wood near Athens
[Lysander and Hermia are alone in the forest. They are talking about their love and the dangers of running away together.]
Lysander:
My good Hermia, I have heard your words,
And I have thought upon them with great care.
If you will marry me, then we may flee
From Athens to some distant land, where none
Will know us or pursue us.
Hermia:
But what of my father? He has commanded
That I must marry Demetrius, or else
Be put to death. I cannot disobey him.
Lysander:
Then let us run, and take our chance with Fate.
If we are found, we shall be banished,
Or worse, perhaps.
Hermia:
I am ready to go with you, wherever you may lead.
Only tell me where you would have me go.
Lysander:
To the wood beyond the river, where the fairies dwell.
There we may find a place to hide, and live in peace.
Scene III – A Wood near Athens
[Puck, a mischievous fairy, is playing tricks on the other fairies. He meets Oberon, the king of the fairies, who is angry because of a quarrel with his queen, Titania.]
Oberon:
Where is this spirit, that I may send him hither?
He is the most obedient and swift of all.
Puck:
Here, my lord, I am. What would you have me do?
Oberon:
Go, and fetch me a flower, whose juice,
When placed upon the eyes of a sleeping man,
Will make him fall in love with the first creature
That he sees upon waking.
Puck:
I know such a flower. It is called "love-in-idleness."
It grows in the fields where the fairies dance.
Oberon:
Good! Then bring it quickly, and I will use it
To make Titania fall in love with a beast.
Scene IV – A Wood near Athens
[The four lovers are lost in the forest. Lysander and Hermia are separated from Demetrius and Helena. They are confused and upset.]
Demetrius:
Why did you not wait for me? You ran away,
And left me behind. Now I must follow you.
Helena:
I have followed you through woods and over hills,
And still you mock me with your cold regard.
Lysander:
I do not love you, Helena. I love Hermia.
Do not follow me, for I will not return.
Hermia:
I do not know where I am. I am lost.
I wish I were back in Athens, safe and sound.
Scene V – A Wood near Athens
[The fairies are at work, using magic to confuse the lovers. Puck also plays tricks on them.]
Puck:
Lord, what fools these mortals be!
They are so full of love, yet so confused.
Oberon:
Let them sleep, and when they wake,
They will forget their pain and confusion.
[The fairies vanish, and the lovers awaken, each in love with the wrong person.]
[The play ends with the lovers reconciled, and the fairies returning to their realm.]
